Brief background

After a chance meeting between brothers Nikolaos Margioris and Stamatios Vazakopoulos, who were known to each other from their homeland Egypt, in 1962 they started scouting for old Egyptian tectonists for the establishment of an Egyptian lodge. At the same time, through the meetings at the Association of Egyptian Greeks in Kaniggos Square, the newly arrived Masons from Egypt were informed about the intention to establish a lodge in Athens.

These actions resulted in a long list of interested parties, so brother Nikolaos Margioris undertook to transfer this desire of the Greek tectons from Egypt to the then Additional Grand Master, brother Miltiadis Puri, who presented the matter to the Grand Master, brother Alexander Tzazopoulos. The Grand Master showed full understanding of this request and supported the settlement and adoption of the Founding Members of the Lodge under establishment in the “Mellis” Lodge No. 76 . Immediately afterwards the settled brothers submitted an application to the Grand Lodge of Greece for the establishment of a lodge under the name “Osiris“, which was unanimously accepted and the date of the establishment of the lodge was set for November 19, 1964.

The establishment of the Laboratory was announced in the simple words of Grand Master A. Tzazopoulos ” …..The Council of the Grand Lodge of Greece accepted the request of a group of friendly brothers, requesting the establishment of a new Laboratory, although they are very sparing in granting such approvals. The application was submitted by a group of refugee brothers from Egypt, who, in the midst of the difficulties created for them by this emigration, felt the mental necessity not to interrupt the Masonic Work they were carrying out during their stay in Egypt.
The Council of the Grand Lodge of Greece, having duly appreciated the zeal of these brethren, but also their desire to gather in this workshop brethren of the same origin, under these very exceptional circumstances, provided the approval of the foundation of a new Lodge under the name of “Osiris” under the number 117 in Eastern Greece. Athens’. .

These simple words in which the establishment of the “Osiris” Lodge for all eternity, according to Masonic terminology, took place, may have concealed all the difficulties that the seven founding members had encountered, but they were the happy expression of their efforts.

Friday was set as the Lodge’s business day, but due to the lack of available space, the Lodge had to meet after the other Lodges had finished their business. However, despite the difficulties overcome by the brethren of the Lodge thanks to their enthusiasm, perseverance and patience, the new Lodge was for many years the stopping place, the unadulterated fraternal oasis, for all the Egyptian Masons who felt within themselves the need to be reunited with their brethren from Egypt and to draw courage and strength from them.
