Brief background
The foundation of the “Miaoulis” Lodge No. 42 in 1908 coincides with the reconstruction of Greek Freemasonry. The first Rev. of the lodge and its founding member, Br. Christos Peristeris was the wife of Ekaterina, great-granddaughter of Andreas Miaoulis, the admiral of the National Vanguard, by his son Nikolaos, so the lodge began its operation in the house of the Miaoulis family. From a relevant reference in the documentary encyclopedia of K. Laskaris, it appears that the brothers chose the name “Miaoulis” for the new lodge in order to honor the family of Andreas Miaoulis.
From the first years of its foundation, the Stoa was the centre of every intellectual, social and charitable movement in Piraeus. In 1911 the Stoa founded the Piraeus Charitable Society under the presidency of its member St. “Miaoulis”, later Endox.
Among other things, the Lodge took over the “New Life” Association, and founded the “Sunday Worker Schools” to combat illiteracy. After the end of the Balkan Wars, the operation of the schools, which had been discontinued in the meantime, resumed, again under the supervision of members of the Lodge, and later their administration was transferred to a committee of ladies of the Piraeus Society.
With the Asia Minor Catastrophe and the arrival of the refugees in Greece, the Lodge showed its national dimension by coming through its Eleonomio, helping many refugee families, while it welcomed and treated many refugees.
In July 1923, when the “Embassy of Friends”, the well-known “Near East Relief”, which consisted mainly of sectarians and clergymen, arrived in Greece, the then Provost of Greece, the “Friends of Greece”, the “Friends of Greece”, the “Friends of Greece”, the “Friends of Greece”, the “Friends of Greece”, the “Friends of Greece”, the “Friends of Greece”, the “Friends of Greece”, the “Friends of Greece”, the “Friends of Greece”. After various short-term relocations, always within the boundaries of Piraeus, the Lodge finally settled in 1930, in the newly-erected Masonic Hall of Piraeus, at 164 A Ypsilantou Street (now 173 A), which had been purchased by the Masonic Association of Piraeus, which had created the Lodge’s branch in 1926. The inauguration of the Tect. On 13 December 1930, the Tecture Hall was opened by Endox. The ceremony was held on 19 December 1913 by the Ed. Milt. The ceremony was held on the 13th of May, 18th of May, at the premises of the University of St. Petersburg, in the presence of the Director of the University of St. Petersburg. Drs. Zalokostas and Dimos Panoutsos, members of the “Miaoulis” Lodge. It is worth mentioning that Endox. Milt. Pouris had established on September 25, 1930 the Masonic Hall of Athens !
The Second World War, the Occupation and the bombing of Piraeus in 1941 by the Germans and in 1944 by the Allies, with the enormous destruction and the hundreds of victims, devastated Piraeus! Very soon, however, after the normalization of the situation, old masons of the “Miaoulis” and “Pistis” lodges of Anat. Piraeus reconstituted these two lodges and with them Piraeus Freemasonry. Thanks to the exemplary operation of these two Piraeus tectonic laboratories, distinguished Piraeans began to enter the Order.
When the earthquakes of 1981 irreparably destroyed the Tect. Mansion of Piraeus, these two laboratories contributed with all their forces, under the coordination of the “Piraeus Masons’ Housing Association” and with the help of the Grand Lodge of Greece, to the construction of the brilliant Tect. The building of the magnificent Great Hall which today houses the Lodges working in the East of Greece, with the help of the support of the Greek State, and with the help of the Greek State’s lodge, which is the largest in the world. Piraeus.
In 2008 the Lodge celebrated its 100 years of operation with a glittering ceremony and the publication of a scrapbook. In the same year, on December 20, the lodge was twinned with the “Pythagoras” Lodge No. 33 East of the city. Antwerp (Belgium).
Today the lodge “Miaoulis” no. 42 in Anat. Piraeus, continues to operate successfully producing brilliant masonic work.
