Brief background

After the catastrophe that struck the Hellenism of Ionia in September 1922 with the collapse of the Asia Minor front, about 1,500,000 refugees fled to Greece. Greece, weak and humiliated by the defeat, undertook the titanic task of caring for all these persecuted people with its meagre resources and the help of organisations such as the English Red Cross, the US Red Cross, the US HAN, Near East Relief and headed by the president of the International Committee for the Rehabilitation of Refugees, the Mason Henry Morgenthaou.

Greek Masons who had made brief efforts for the application of humanitarian principles and assisted these organizations in their charitable work joined with brother Masons of these organizations and decided to found a new Lodge. As their purpose was to pursue with all their might the true brotherhood of peoples, they chose for the new lodge the name “Brotherhood“. Immediately after its foundation, the Lodge honored the emissaries of foreign charitable organizations for their contribution. Among the first actions of the “Adelphosis” Lodge was the solemn ceremony of the unveiling of the foundation stone, which was taken after Government permission, from the sacred rock of the Acropolis. Action with which he awakened the desire for the construction of the present Masonic Hall of Athens.

The sessions of the Lodge during this period were held, with the approval of His Grace the Grand Anatolian Grand Anatolian of Greece, in English or French. After the departure of the American brothers who had assisted the Lodge actively, due to formal irregularities, the Lodge was put into inactivity in 1925, but soon returned to an active state during the masonic year 1926-27, working now in the Greek language.

The lodge continued to operate until February 1941, despite the reduced number of brothers, as many of the members of the lodge offered their services at the front. With the occupation of the Masonic Hall by the Occupation Forces, the Adelphosis Lodge was forcibly silenced until December 1948,when order and tranquility were restored and life resumed its normal rhythm. Since then, the Lodge has continued to consistently carry out its masonic duty of epoch-making and charity work.
