The “Old Man of Moria”, the Thodorakis of the 1821 Struggle, the General, the Hero of the Greeks!
He was born in Ravouni in Messinia in 1770. In 1810 he joined the British army and received the rank of major. He joined the Society of Friends, took the lead in the declaration of the Revolution and on 23 March 1821 liberated Kalamata.
His brave spirit was combined with his unparalleled strategic intellect. Thanks to Theodoros Kolokotronis, revolutionary action was not impulsive but targeted.
Victorious at Valtetsi, he went on to occupy Tripoli, a city in the heart of the Peloponnese, in order to crush Dramalis at Dervenakia, thus completing the first phase of the Revolution.
Theodoros Kolokotronis was caught in the vortex of Greek discord and was imprisoned in Hydra and in the castle of Nafplio. After his release he was sentenced to death by the Greeks only to be pardoned by King Otto and given the rank of General and Councillor of State.
General Theodoros Kolokotronis died in 1843, remaining eternally immortal.
