His father Michael was a member of the Society of Friends. He studied economics and became a stockbroker and banker. He was held in unlimited esteem for his integrity of character. He was one of the founders of the“Philergus Society” whose object was to aid the suffering. He helped financially the Cretan revolution and also provided assistance to the liberation movements of Thessaly and Epirus. In 1869 he was in Constantinople and worked for the democratic modernization of Turkey.

He was initiated into Freemasonry in France at the“Union d’Orient” Lodge in 1865. He was a founding member of the“Progress” Lodge (1868) in Constantinople of which he was Venerable. He converted his friend Sultan Murat V to Freemasonry and supported him in his brief recovery to the throne. Unfortunately, by conspiracy Murat was overthrown and placed in confinement. Scaliere was hunted down, lost all his property and fled to Greece. He died penniless in 1891.
