Ο Sir Edward Gray (Sir Edward Grey, 1862-1933) was a British politician and diplomat, best known for his tenure as Foreign Secretary of the United Kingdom from 1905 to 1916. He was the longest serving holder of the post, guiding British foreign policy at a critical time that included the outbreak of World War I.
Born in London to an aristocratic family, Gray was educated at Oxford University. He joined the Liberal Party and was elected as an MP in 1885. As Foreign Secretary, he worked to maintain peace in Europe through the policy of the Entente Cordiale with France and Russia. However, the failure of negotiations to avert war in 1914 overshadowed his tenure. His famous phrase, ‘The lights are going out all over Europe’, remains characteristic of his time.
After resigning from the Foreign Office, he served as British Ambassador to the United States (1919-1920).
Sir Edward Gray was a Freemason. No specific records are available but it is certain that he was personally connected with Freemasonry.
His political career, particularly his role in British foreign policy in the early 20th century, is the best known element of his legacy, and his name does not appear in masonic historical records for political reasons.
Sir Edward passed away in 1933, leaving behind a legacy as a central figure in international diplomacy in modern history.
