Sakellariou Georgios (Gortynia, 1888 - Athens, 1964)

He studied philology and philosophy at the University of Athens. He pursued postgraduate studies at the Universities of Geneva, Princeton, Columbia and the Jean-Jacques Rousseau Pedagogical Institute. He took part in the Balkan Wars of 1912-13. He was a teacher at secondary schools from 1906 to 1917. He then became a curator at the University of Athens (1923-27) and shortly afterwards professor of Pedagogical Psychology at the Marasleion Academy in 1925-26.

He is recognized as a full professor of Pedagogy and Psychology at the University of Thessaloniki(1927-41). He then became Professor of Philosophy at the University of Athens (1941-58). He was a pioneer and advocate for the introduction of the Psychology course in universities.

In 1954 he founded the “Hellenic Psychological Society” together with Professor Konstantinidis of Psychiatry and other psychologists, pedagogues and other scientists. The research, communications and studies of this Society were published in the magazine “Prometheus”.

He has been a member of international scientific societies, academies, participated in international conferences. He left a large body of writings and scientific work : Sociology, The Psychology of the Child, General Psychology, The Psychology of the Adolescent, etc. The State honoured him with the Order of the Order of George I and the Order of the Phoenix.

Before his death he forgot his hometown and in his private will of 15-1-1963 he left all his movable and immovable property for the foundation of the “GEORGE AND ANNE SAKELLARIOU EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION”, whose main purpose is the granting of scholarships to young men and women from the province of Gortynia.
