Rufos-Kanakaris Loukas (Patras, 1878 - Athens, 11/11/1949)

Son of a noble family of Patras. He studied law at the University of Athens and returned to Patras to join his father’s election campaigns. At the age of 26 he was elected as a member of the Patras parliament. In 1910 he was re-elected as a deputy and in 1912 Eleftherios was re-elected in 1912. In 1910 he was re-elected as a member of the parliament, but he did not accept. In 1913 he took the position of General Governor of Crete again at Venizelos’ suggestion. His official installation was attended by King Constantine I, El. Venizelos, P. Kountouriotis and many political leaders were present. As a commander he left great work in public works, organization of the Rural Police etc.

In 1915 he returned to Athens and was again elected as a deputy. The following year he took over the Ministry of the Interior and temporarily the Ministry of Justice. In a statement he declared himself in favour of King Constantine. After the victory of the Venizelists he was arrested and imprisoned until 1920. In the 1920 elections he was elected as a deputy and in March 1922 he took over the Ministry of National Economy. He resigned and left with Prime Minister Dim. Gounaris for Genoa for an international conference. He returns in May and takes over his ministry again. After the Asia Minor disaster he resigns.

In 1925 he became Minister of Education and Ecclesiastical Affairs in the government of Th. In 1925, he was appointed Minister of Education in the Ministry of Education in Greece in the government of Th. He then became Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Eutyaxis government. In 1931, on his initiative, he founded the Association for the Protection of Greek Products, a proposal accepted by all the great businessmen and economists of the time, Venizelos, Xen. Ζολώτας, Γ. Pezmatzoglou, Th. Σοφούλης, Γ. Mercouris etc. In the 1936 elections, he was elected for the last time as a deputy of Achaia. He was also involved in the organization of public administration and scientific study and organization, performance of work, founding similar companies.
