A descendant of the great family of Mavromichalia. Because he was handsome they called him ”Le beau”. In 1918 he was sent as Major General of the 4th Division to Asia Minor (Smyrna). In 1920, as a Venizelist, he retired. He was recalled in 1922 and appointed General Military Director of Old Greece. In 1923 he becomes Lieutenant General and army chief in Evros. He was also Minister of Interior in 1922-23 and Minister of Military Affairs in 1924. From 1929 to 1932 he was elected Aristide Senator.
