Panagiotis Daggles was a great liberal military figure who was glorified during the Balkan wars as a close associate of the other great tactician Eleftherios Venizelos. Together with Admiral Pavlos Kountouriotis they formed the leading triumvirate that led to the creation of the provisional government of National Defence.

He was the first to graduate from the Evelpidon School (1871). An excellent officer, he was involved from early on in the effort to liberate Epirus and Macedonia. He participated in the unfortunate war of 1897. He was appointed Chief of the Army of Epirus in 1912-13. He was the one who took over Ioannina from the Turkish military commander. He was a founding member and president of the Epirotic comitat under the name“Epirotic Company” based in Ioannina and organized the secret liberation organization“Panhellenic Organization“.

Daggles was a staff officer of the artillery and reached the rank of General. He modified and improved the Schneider – Daggles gun, which now bore his own name. In 1914 he voluntarily retired and entered politics. Unfortunately, that turbulent period brought the national division which plagued and damaged modern Greece for many years. In 1916 he became Minister of Military Affairs and sided with Venizelos in his dispute with King Constantine. In the parliamentary elections of 1 November 1920 he was elected as a member of parliament. After the departure of Eleftherios Venizelos, he became chairman of the Steering Committee of the Liberal Party.
