Ο Anthony Paez (José Antonio Páez Herrera, 1790-1873), President of Venezuela, was one of the most important figures of the Venezuelan independence and political scene in the 19th century. Born in Acarigua, Venezuela, he was a leading figure in Venezuela’s war of independence against Spain and served as President of the country in three terms, from 1830 to 1835, from 1839 to 1843 and again from 1861 to 1863.
As a military leader, Paez played a central role in throwing off Spanish rule and consolidating Venezuelan independence. He was distinguished for his political savvy, but also for his strategic ability on the battlefield.
He was also known for his involvement in Freemasonry which had an impact on his political direction, defending the principles of liberty and fraternity promoted by Freemasons.
He was an active member of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Press (AASR) and contributed significantly to the establishment and existence of 18 active lodges in Venezuela.
Freemasonry played an important role in Venezuelan political and social life during its time, influencing many leaders and shaping the early development of the country.
He was exiled to New York where he died on 6 May 1873.
