He was born in 1854. A descendant of the Peloponnesian family of Varvoglou or Barboglou, which originated from Serres and distinguished itself in the various national struggles from 1684 to 1821, he inherited his devotion to national causes from his grandfather George Varvoglou, who was initiated in 1819 by the ethno-martyr Patriarch Gregory V into the secrets of the Friends. After attending the circular courses in his homeland, he entered the Military School of the Evelpidon Military School in 1870. He graduated in 1877 and was commissioned into the Artillery. Having been particularly involved in pyrotechnics, he was appointed Director of the Greek Pyritium Factory and Professor of Pyrotechnics at the Evelides School, at the same time teaching Military Technology. He served as a section commander of the Artillery in the Ministry of Military Affairs and wrote a considerable amount of work on the artillery.
