Ο Joachim Myrat (Joachim Murat, 1767-1815) was a French military and politician, known for his brilliant career during the Napoleonic Wars and his reign as King of Naples from 1808 to 1815. Born on 25 March 1767 to a humble family in France, Myrath began his career as a soldier. Thanks to his excellent military skills and his close relationship with Napoleon Bonaparte, he quickly rose through the ranks of the army.
In 1808, Napoleon appointed him King of Naples, where he undertook important reforms, promoting education and reorganising the judicial system. Despite his ambitions, his attempt to break away from Napoleon and ally with the Allies ended in failure, leading to his execution in 1815.
As far as Freemasonry is concerned, Myrat was indeed a member of the Brotherhood and was associated with the Grand Orient of France. He was initiated into a lodge under the auspices of the Grand Lodge of France during the Napoleonic era, a period in which the Masonic movement had strong connections with the political and military elites in France and its territories.
As an active Freethinker, he played an important role in promoting the ideals of freedom, equality and brotherhood, which influenced his governance of Naples. His membership in the Brotherhood was an important element of his life.
Myrat’s association with Freemasonry is important in the context of his leadership, as the Brotherhood was seen as a source of support for Napoleon’s regime and the broader revolutionary ideas of the time.
He was executed on 13 October 1815 in Calabria, Italy.
