James Monroe, (Virginia, 4/28/1758 - New York, 4/7/1831)
Warsaw Lodge No. 29

Ο James Monroe (James Monroe, 1758-1831) served as the 5th President of the United States from 1817 to 1825. Born in Virginia, he served in the American Revolutionary War and later developed a successful political career. Before becoming President, he served as Secretary of State and Secretary of War, and was the U.S. ambassador to France and Britain. His presidency was known for the “Age of National Unanimity”, as well as for the imposition of the well-known “Monroe Doctrine”, which set US policy for intervention in the affairs of the Western Hemisphere.

Monroe was a Freemason and a member of the Virginia Lodge. He was admitted to Freemasonry in 1776 at the Warsaw Lodge No. 29 while his participation in Freemasonry was important during his political career.

He held various ranks in Freemasonry and his ideas of brotherhood were in line with his political beliefs of freedom, independence and unity.

Monroe was an active participant in the Masonic Brotherhood and remained a devoted member throughout his life.

Monroe’s involvement in Freemasonry is consistent with the values of freedom and fraternity that he strongly supported during his presidency, which are reflected in his commitment to Freemasonry.

He died on 4 July 1831 in New York.
