F:. Alexander the Great

(Forty Churches of Eastern Thrace 1893-Athens 1967)

 

Director of the Commercial Schools of Samos, Heraklion, Crete, Volos and Thessaloniki. After the Asia Minor disaster he became involved in politics. In 1926 he was sworn in as Minister of Health, Welfare and Public Perception in the government of A. Zaimi. He was repeatedly elected minister in coalition governments. He served as a minister in the government of the Republic of Greece for several years. With G. Kafantaris he founded the Progressive Party. In 1933 he was appointed a member of the National Coalition Government. He was elected MP for Drama in 1933. In 1934 he became Minister of Welfare in the government of P. Tsaldaris. In 1935 he was elected MP for Thessaloniki and together with other MPs founded an independent Democratic Group. During the Metaxas dictatorship he was deported for two years (1938-40). After the Great War he founded the Democratic Radical Party and in 1945 he joined the EAM coalition. He became director of the newspaper Free Greece. In 1947 he was arrested and imprisoned for 3 years. In 1951 he was re-elected as a deputy of Athens with the E.D.A. He collaborated politically with N. Plastira in 1952. Alongside politics, he was involved in journalism as director of the Newspaper of the Refugees, in 1923-25 in Eleftheron Laon, in 1929-32 in Thessaloniki and in Neon Politis 1936-38. He died emaciated but proud and uncompromising.
