Ο Joseph Hieronymus Lalant (Joseph Jérôme Lefrançois de Lalande, 1732-1807) was a distinguished French astronomer of the 18th century, as well as an author and member of the Academy of Sciences. He was born on 11 July 1732 in Bourges, France, and showed an early interest in science, particularly astronomy. He studied in Paris, where his acquaintance with the astronomer Jerome Leladier shaped his career.
During his lifetime, Lalant made important contributions to astronomy, including detailed observations of the planets and precise calculations of their orbits. He wrote many scientific works, most famously “Traité d’astronomie”, which was considered a reference in his time.
Lalant was very active intellectually and socially. He was a member of many scientific organizations and was actively involved in promoting the dissemination of science to the general public.
As far as Freemasonry was concerned, Lalant was an active member. He was a member of the famous Lodge Les Neuf Sœurs (The Nine Sisters) in Paris, which was a meeting place for prominent figures of the Enlightenment. This lodge belonged to the Grand Orient de France, one of the main Masonic jurisdictions in France. As a Venerable of the same lodge, he initiated Elvetius and Voltaire.
Lalant’s active participation in Les Neuf Sœurs lodge highlights his commitment to the Masonic principles of reason, knowledge, improvement and progress of society. His membership of this lodge further demonstrates his connection to the intellectual and philosophical currents of the late 18th century.
He died on 4 April 1807, leaving an important legacy in both science and philosophy.
