Konstantinos Esslin (Athens, 3/12/1844 - 20/1/1920)

Greek politician, of Bavarian origin. His father was a philhellene. He studied law at the University of Athens, where he completed his doctoral thesis (1866). He continued his studies in Leipzig, Munich, Zurich and Brussels. He returned and practised law in Athens and Syros.

He was an active member of the National Society (E.E.) In 1866 he lost his brother Ferdinand, who was killed in the struggle for the independence of Crete. Two years later he was appointed a magistrate in the Judiciary. . During the government of Demetrios Rallis he was appointed Prefect of Fthiotida and Fokida. In the war of 1897, he managed by skilful political manoeuvres and negotiations to stop the Turkish commander Etem Pasha from entering Lamia and waiting for the armistice.

He then became involved in politics. He formed a radical political group against extreme liberalism (1909). He was the first President of the Athens Bar Association. He was elected as an independent Member of the Athens Parliament in the 1910 Revisionist Parliament. In 1916 he was persecuted as an anti-Venizelist. He was exiled together with Dimitrios Gounaris, Ion Dragoumis, Vikt. I. Metaxas etc. in Corsica (Ajaccio). In 1919 he returned and was tried by an extraordinary military court for the “Novmvriana” riots. In prison he would fall seriously ill and die ingloriously in the “Elpis” Municipal Hospital.
