Emil Frey, (Arlesheim, 24/10/1838 - Arlesheim, 24/12/1922)

Ο Emile Frey (Emil Johann Rudolf Frey, 1838-1922), born on 24 February 1838 in Arlesheim, Switzerland, was a prominent Swiss politician, military officer and diplomat who served as President of Switzerland in 1894. During his lifetime, he combined his political career with a distinguished military career.

He studied law before becoming actively involved in public administration. As a young man, he served in the American Civil War, fighting in the ranks of the Union Army. This experience had a profound impact on him, providing him with opportunities to develop military and leadership expertise. Returning to Switzerland, he devoted himself to politics and service to his country. He was elected to the Swiss Federal Council and played an active role in the formulation of foreign policy. He served as President of Switzerland in 1894, promoting neutrality and peaceful diplomatic relations.

It defended the country’s neutrality and strengthened its international diplomacy. He also served as Switzerland’s ambassador to the United States, making a significant contribution to strengthening relations between the two countries.

Frey was a member of the Brotherhood of Freemasonry. He was initiated into a lodge under the auspices of Great Alpine Lodge of Switzerland (Grand Lodge Alpina of Switzerland). His ideology, with its emphasis on the principles of equality, freedom and peace, was fully in harmony with the fundamental values of the Fraternity and, at the same time, with his political activities and diplomatic service.

Emile Frey died on 24 December 1922 in Arlesheim, leaving a legacy as a champion of peace and diplomacy and a responsible leader who contributed significantly to the maintenance of Switzerland’s neutrality.
