Ο Francis Joseph I (Franz Joseph I or Francis Joseph I, 1830-1916) was King of Austria from 1848 to 1916 and Emperor of the Austro-Hungarian Empire from 1867 to 1916. He ruled during a turbulent period in Europe, with major events such as the 1848 Revolution and World War I. His reign was characterised by tight central control, strict conservative policies and limited reform, but also by the stabilisation and growth of the empire.
Francis Joseph I’s life was affected by personal tragedies, such as the death of his wife, Elizabeth of Austria (Sissy), and the murder of his son Rudolf. Gradually, his power was challenged by various ethnic groups in the empire, but he remained on the throne for nearly 68 years, making him one of the longest-serving leaders in the history of Europe.
Regarding his involvement in Freemasonry, Francis Joseph I was initiated into a Lodge in Vienna. However, his position as a ruler and his political stance removed him from the Brotherhood; however, his participation in Masonic events is verified in historical records.
He died on 21 November 1916 in Vienna.
