He was openly against the Royal Dynasty and participated in revolutionary movements. He was released in 1862 and continued his political career. He served as Minister of Public Education. At that time the name of the University was changed from Athenian to National.

He was a journalist in the newspapers of the time, writing very sharp and witty articles (Athena, Ethniki, To Melon tis Patridos (The Future of the Fatherland) and Εφηmeris tis Sizizithias (The Journal of Discussions)). He founded his own party under the name“National Committee” and with it he was elected as a member of parliament. In 1864 he was President of the Second National Assembly of Athens. This National Assembly passed the new Constitution in which George I was sworn in.

He has been Minister of Finance and Foreign Affairs in various governments. He was elected Prime Minister a total of six (6) times, and was and still is the youngest elected Prime Minister of Greece (at the age of 36). Because of his radical temperament and his position against the Russo-Turkish war of 1877 (supporting a Greek-Turkish friendship) he faced popular anger by being stoned to death in his home! He died very young and disappointed at the age of 50.
