"Byzantion" Gallery

He studied at the Great School of the Nation. He then attended the School of Languages and Commerce. In 1915 he came to Greece and worked for 5 years at the National Bank of Thessaloniki. From 1922 he worked at the newspaper Elefthero Vima, by D. Lambrakis, which was renamed VIMA and Athinaika Nea, later Ta Nea. There he now published sketches and cartoons. His work is distinguished by the excellence and detail of the image, the movement, the liveliness but mainly for the humorous expression and wit of the message he gives. His satirical eye is penetrating.

Dimitriadis has mainly political speech and an amazing ability to create cartoons of political men, which are immediately perceived by the public.During the period of occupation his cartoons have a black tragic humour. Painters and engravers will join the resistance struggle, (example cartoons of Mussolini ) so Demetriades with his pencil will give excellent examples of art. His talent is multifaceted, he adorns school alphabets, publishes cartoon series either of modern society or e.g. the masterly adaptation of Homer’s Odyssey. In 1961 he was awarded the first prize of the World Competition of Political Cartooning in Los Angeles and in 1969 he was awarded the Prize for Literature and Arts of the Academy of Athens. Dimitriadis can be considered a precursor artist of today’s comics. He was the so-called Dean of Cartooning who gave us laughter and skepticism.
