University Professor

Son of Nikolaos Costis, professor of the University Medical School, physician to King Otto, Nicholas Costis. He attended the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Athens in 1851/52, before transferring to the Law School and continuing his studies in Heidelberg, Munich and Berlin. He received his doctorate in 1856. He returned to Greece and became a lecturer in Criminal Law at the University of Athens, (1859). Due to political opposition he left the university and served as a judge at the Greek Consulate in Constantinople, (1860-63). He returned and continued his traditions as a lecturer. In 1785 he was elected adjunct professor of Criminal Law 1875-79 and from 1879 as a full professor. He was elected Rector 1884-85. He published important studies, monographs and procedural writings . He was decorated with the Order of the Saviour, and medals of excellence in 1886. He was a member of the Grand Lodge of Greece.
