WELCOME TO THE GREAT LODGE OF GREECE

From 1811 until today Freemasonry in our country is served by its members, pointing out to all the path of Virtue, Morality and Justice, on which we ought to walk during our lives.

Free Masons throughout the world work unceasingly for the moral and spiritual upliftment of humanity through the peaceful and gradual elevation of the individual. They consider freedom of thought and conscience to be the ultimate good and hold that all men are born free, having equal rights as brothers and sisters. This conviction is independent of any difference between them in intellectual or material qualifications, origin, social status, nationality, race, color, language, or religion.

Throughout the years Freemasonry has promoted that world progress is only possible through the harmonization of common human interests, voluntary cooperation, love, respect and mutual tolerance. As in a society of brothers and sisters in free solidarity, which will ensure for all the maximum freedom, maximum development and maximum prosperity.

As in a society of brothers and sisters in free solidarity, which will ensure for all the maximum freedom, maximum development and maximum prosperity.  It also teaches in an experiential way and urges to transmit by example to all humanity the study of love, as the only material for filling the free consciousness of man, because love leads to the transcendence of man’s individuality, overcomes self-enclosure in the “I” and opens the way for rebirth, return and union.

This “passage in life to the hereafter”, according to Freemasonry, is accomplished by descending into the depths of consciousness, with the help of “the divine spark in me”, which is the way and life. This is and thus the completion of our inner Temple, built for the glory of its works, for the sake of men, is accomplished.  With the initiatory rebirth and our attunement to the Universal Rhythm we acquire eternal hypostatic existence and we now feel that all people are our integral members, with whom we cannot be divided.

Through all this expanded state of consciousness man transcends the separateness of his individuality and ego and realizes the multiplicity of his existence through the experience of love. Freemasonry is an experiential methodology that guides its members through systematic work and perpetual building, to experience unity in harmony, union and concord, through the pursuit of knowledge “in justice and love”.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is Freemasonry?

Freemasonry is a worldwide philosophical, progressive and charitable organization that aims at the moral and spiritual improvement of its members through self-knowledge, the search for Truth, Solidarity and the application of Masonic Ethics.

Freemasonry works unceasingly for the progress and moral and spiritual upliftment of Mankind through the peaceful and gradual elevation of the Individual.

Why are you a secret organization?

We are not a secret organization, but we participate in lodge meetings that are private and open only to its members, just like many other social groups. Freemasonry’s rules and goals are available to the public. The meeting places are known and members, i.e. Freemasons, can, if they wish, speak openly about Freemasonry.

Is it true that Freemasons only look after each other?

It’s not true. Charity is at the core of Masonic ethics and has been Freemasonry’s most important work since its inception, since it defines itself, by its actions, as a charitable organization.

The charities of Freemasonry and Freemasons are an important contribution to society. Philanthropic acts are not necessarily always financial assistance to people in need, but also acts inspired by love for Man.

What happens at a lodge meeting?

The meeting is divided into two parts.

In the first part, as in any organized body, there is a certain amount of administrative work, i.e., ratification of the minutes of the previous meeting, proposing and voting for new members, discussing and voting on Lodge financial matters, elections for the election of the boards of directors of the Lodges, reading the correspondence, etc.

In the second part and depending on the program there are the ceremonies for the initiation (admission) of the new Freemasons or their progressive advancement and speeches/lectures that are relevant to the issues that concern Freemasons.

Why do Freemasons take oaths?

Freemasons do not swear, but affirm in earnest on their honor, as free men and moral men, that they will follow the teachings and values of Freemasonry, as they have been formed through the ages, as well as the Masonic statutes, as they are reflected in the Charter and General Rules of the Grand Lodge of Greece. This, moreover, is the case in any organized public or private collective governed by rules of participation, administration and ethical conduct.

What are the secrets of Freemasonry?

Freemasonry’s secrets are only the traditional ways of identification among its members, which are not used indiscriminately, but merely as a confirmation of membership, e.g. when a Freemason visits a lodge where he is not known.

Why do you call God the Great Architect of the Universe?

Freemasonry embraces all individuals who believe in God. Belief in God is a necessary condition for acceptance into Freemasonry. Freemasonry includes in its ranks men of all religions, such as Christians, Muslims, Hindus, Jews, etc. and generally people who believe in one religion.

Freemasonry’s use of the nickname “Great Architect” is a supreme tribute to the God each member believes in, while avoiding any religious differences. Individuals of different religions collectively declare their belief in God by calling him “Great Architect”, a nickname first encountered in Plato’s “Timaeus” dialogue. It should also be categorically emphasized that religious discussions are not allowed in the galleries.
